The Brain Health Trust is a Cape Town-based non-profit dedicated to protecting brain health in South African sport.

A concussion is a brain injury caused by a direct blow to the head or a forceful impact to the body that causes the brain to move rapidly within the skull. It can affect how a person thinks, feels, behaves, and functions. While many people recover fully with the right care, others experience ongoing symptoms that can impact daily life, performance, and overall well-being.

One of the greatest challenges is that mTBI is often an invisible injury. Individuals may not recognise the full extent of their impairment, or may hesitate to report symptoms out of fear, stigma, or difficulty articulating what they’re experiencing.

The people closest to you are often the first to notice something’s not right.

A teammate, coach, or parent might spot changes others miss, such as hesitation after a hit, confusion, or just not being themselves. When it comes to concussion, these early signs matter. The Brain Health Trust encourages a culture where speaking up is normal, safe, and supported. If you notice something, say something. Trust your instincts. Looking out for each other is one of the most powerful ways to protect brain health — on and off the field.
